RIO Robotic Fitness Challenge

End-to-end Robotic Challenge: Detect, Measure and Report Corrosion and Leakages

Driven by the need to reduce maintenance expenses and safeguard vital infrastructure, the industry is actively pursuing the rapid advancement and transformation of Inspection & Maintenance robotic platforms.

SPRINT Robotics is organizing the Rio Robotic Fitness Challenge on August 7- 8 2025. This asset owner-led event will facilitate a comprehensive evaluation of robotic solutions designed for AI-driven corrosion reporting and advanced leak detection across compressed air, liquids, and gases, bringing together the entire value chain.

Call for Inspection & Maintenance Robotic solution providers to join the Challenge

This initiative extends an invitation to all robotic manufacturers, to present their solutions, a combination of robotics and AI reporting in a dynamic setting and connect with key industry figures in the region.

Venue:

This year’s Robotic Fitness Challenge will be held at CTDUT, Brazil’s specialized technology center for pipelines and terminals, which functions as a shared laboratory for the pipeline community.

Contact us at events@sprintrobotics.org for more information about the challenge.

Participating Asset Owners:

Rio Robotic Fitness Challenge Mechanics

This series of challenges invites I&M robotic manufacturers to demonstrate their solutions across three distinct scenarios, designed to simulate real-world operational environments. Participants can subscribe to one, two, or all three challenges, which will run in parallel and be judged by a jury of Asset Owners on a “Passed, Failed, Exceeds” basis.

Challenge 1: Internal Loop (Ground Level)

  • Environment: Approximately 300-meter long, 12-inch non-insulated pipe at ground level (grassland).
  • Leakage Simulation: Ability to open one or two flanges for a dripping tinted / colored water leakage. Simulation of one or two compressed air or nitrogen leaks. Simulation of one gas leakage (e.g., calibration gas like Methane & CO).
  • Defect Detection: Scope includes detection of corrosion and other defects using robotic platforms and AI reporting. UT is optional

Challenge 2: Launching Station (Elevated Piping)

  • Environment: Approximately 100-meter long section with piping elevated at roughly 1 meter high. Dimensions include 2-inch, 3-inch, and 12-inch non-insulated pipes on grating.
  • Leakage Simulation: Similar leakage simulations as Challenge 1, using tinted / colored water, gases (from calibration bottles), and compressed air/nitrogen.
  • Defect Detection: Scope includes detection of corrosion spots using robotic platforms and AI reporting. UT is optional.
  •

Challenge 3: Walkway near Tanks (Complex Access)

  • Environment: Difficult access due to stairs and obstacles. Area includes significant corrosion, flanges, valves, piping, and structures. An optional storage tank with a non-accessible fixed roof is also in scope.
  • Leakage Simulation: Similar leakage simulations as Challenge 1, using tinted / colored water, gases (from calibration bottles), and nitrogen or compressed air.
  • Defect Detection: Scope includes detection of corrosion and other defects using robotic platforms and AI reporting. UT is optional.
  •

Judging Criteria: Robotic solutions will be assessed on their ability to accurately identify and report corrosion, defects, and various types of leaks within the specified environments. Judges will prioritize solutions demonstrating efficiency, reliability, and precision in real-world simulated conditions. Measuring  wall thickness (UT is optional)

Safety & PPE: Participants are required to bring and wear their own PPE, including safety shoes, a helmet, and a long-sleeved shirt, throughout the challenge.

This is your chance to demonstrate your technology to asset owner decision-makers: Get valuable feedback and potentially be selected for an all-expenses-paid pilot test or invited to bid on real industry services.

Contact us at events@sprintrobotics.org for more information about the challenge.
